Exigy enhances the Midnight Transfer Film Grading experience

London, December 2005 – Soho-based Midnight Transfer have recently installed Exigy monitors in their new Film Grading Suite which is the final stage of the upgrade.

Already providing a comprehensive range of services to the film industry, the recent redesign allows Midnight Transfer to move into the world of cinema previews. Greg Barrett, Operations Manager explains, 'We wanted to create the feel and build of a cinema, within the intimacy of the suite. Other post houses have done this but we wanted to go a step further, so we got in touch with acoustic and technical design consultants, White Mark Ltd (subsequently appointed to design the room), who recommended Exigy monitors.'

Barrett continues, 'We did a listening test at a home cinema featuring Exigy speakers, which made our minds up. They sound so clear – and that’s exactly what we wanted in the Film Grading Suite.'

Matt Dobson, founder of Exigy, talks about the speaker set up. 'The room is fully configured for all flavours of 5.1 i.e. Dolby 5.1, 5.1EX, and DTS ES. At present the front L & R are installed for stereo monitoring with the centre, LFE and surrounds following soon. This system is the latest non-ported Exigy design providing excellent low frequency dynamics.'

Matt explains why this system is different. 'Sealed or non-ported cabinets are second order high pass systems as opposed to the more usual ported, fourth order systems. Ported systems often require additional electronic high pass filtering making them sixth or even eighth order systems. This reduction in slope of the LF high pass characteristic is the reason for lower group delay and improved transient performance with these Exigy loudspeakers, most unusual in large format monitor systems – at the moment!'
